York Graduate Selected for Boston College Athletic Hall of Fame

Elmhurst native Maria Cicero Lindberg will be inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame Sept. 7, according to a statement released Tuesday by the York High School athletic department.

Cicero, who graduated from York High School in 2001, is only the seventh women's track and field athlete to receive this honor in the Hall of Fame's 42-year history.

At York, she was the Illinois cross country state champion and state record-holder her senior year. That same year, she was the state indoor and outdoor track champion in the 1,600 and 3,200, where she set the state record of 10:17 in the 3,200 victory. She place 13th at the Foot Locker Nationals after a runner-up finish at the Midwest Foot Locker Regional. And, she finished second at the Golden West Invitational in the 3,200. In 2001, she held the fastest indoor time in the nation in the 3,200.

At Boston College, she competed in seven NCAA competitions and was a four-time All-American in both cross country and track and field. She placed 15th, 16th and 18th in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and fifth in the 10,000 at the NCAA Track and Field Championships to earn her All-American status.

As a freshman at BC, she won the USA Junior Cross Country title and went on to compete at the 2002 World Cross Country Championships in Ireland, where she finished 29th. She was the 2003 New England Cross Country Champion.

She is a four-time All-Big East selection, captured the 10,000 title at the 2005 Big East Championship and holds the Boston College record for the 10,000M event. She is the only Eagle to lead BC in three regionals, earning All-Northeast Region three times in cross country. She also broke the 16-year-old 5,000M record by 11 seconds, and now stands second in the record book.
