Chicago Man Charged in Evanston IHOP Shooting

Cornelius Jones is accused of asking the victim for his gang affiliation before unloading three shots early Sunday morning.

Evanston, IL - A Chicago man has been charged in the shooting that occurred in the parking lot of the IHOP restaurant on Asbury Avenue over Fourth of July weekend.

Cornelius Jones, 29 was charged Friday with aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by felon and possession of cannabis after police identified him as the man who shot a 25-year-old man from Beach Park around 5:05 a.m. Sunday.

Police say the victim was with several witnesses when the shooter came up to him and asked for his gang affiliation. After the victim denied being a member of any gang, the shooter pulled out a handgun and shot him three times, fleeing the area in a grey vehicle.

The victim walked into Presence Saint Francis Hospital with gunshot wounds to his torso, arm and leg, according to Evanston police.

Police also say Jones was the subject of an ongoing narcotics investigation that began prior to the IHOP shooting. He was arrested on drug and weapons charges at his Chicago home on Wednesday and later identified as the offender in the IHOP shooting.
