Heartwood Center for Body Mind Spirit, a holistic health services center in Evanston, purchased two adjacent properties on August 19 as part of their commitment to create a healing community in the Dempster/Dodge area. The parking lot located at 1808/1810 Dempster was purchased for much needed parking. The adjacent building at 1809 Dempster Street was also acquired for increased office space, and Heartwood plans to improve its exterior. This is following the successful Curt’s Café campaign which to date has raised over $50,000.
The ribbon cutting ceremony for the adjacent properties will take place on Wednesday, September 3 at 9:30am and will be attended by the Mayor of Evanston, Elizabeth Tisdahl, the Executive Director of the Evanston Chamber of Commerce, Elaine Kemna-Irish, and the Alderman of the 2nd Ward, Peter Braithwaite. A lite breakfast and refreshments will be served.
Nancy Floy, founder of Heartwood, is leading the way in creating a healing community in the Dempster/Dodge area. “With the support of the Heartwood community members, we are so happy to have purchased these properties,” says Nancy. “The properties have been vacant for over 7 years and an eye sore for the neighborhood. In true Heartwood fashion, we have cleaned it up, which has visibly helped beautify the block between Dodge and Darrow on Dempster. This is our continued effort toward uplifting this area and creating a healing corridor.”
The neighborhood within a block or two of Dempster Street and Dodge Avenue is drastically changing. The newly renovated Heartwood Center includes the beautiful Skylight event space, seating up to 300 people, featuring wellness programs taught by internationally known practitioners. The former Perla Café has been purchased for the new Curt’s Café South. Now with the purchase of these additional adjacent properties, which includes a parking lot, the community is visibly becoming more vibrant and beautiful.
However, Heartwood is just one of the institutions assisting in the process of creating a strong and inspirational community committed to giving back to the Evanston area. A Starbucks is under construction and expected to open very soon, a new grocery store, Valli Products, is set to open within the year, and the Evanston West Village Business Association is establishing a greater presence through new community initiatives and benefits for businesses and their consumers.
Heartwood is a holistic health services center committed to providing excellence in care to Evanston and the greater Chicagoland area. It features newly renovated offices for integrative healthcare practitioners, a classroom for teachers, an event space, and a conference room.
