Surveillance Video Shows Man Knock Menorah Over at Chabad House

Surveillance tape released by the Evanston Police Department shows what looks like a young man knocking over the large menorah at the Chabad House, causing one of the bulbs to shatter.

Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the person on the tape, which can be viewed above. The incident happened at 4:22 a.m. May 16 at the Tannenbaum Chabad House in the 2000 block of Orrington.

The male can be seen walking by the large menorah, pushing it over, then continuing on his way. He was walking with another male, who did not stop while the other male knocked the menorah over. Police said there is no indication that it’s a hate crime.

The fall caused one of the light bulbs to shatter, according to an article in the Daily Northwestern. The menorah was vandalized four years ago in what the Chabad house believes was, in fact, a hate crime, though it was never categorized that way by police.

Tips can be submitted by sending a text to 274637 (CRIMES) and include EPD TIP in the subject line with the information or by calling the Evanston Police Department at (847)866-5000.
