Traffic Stop Leads to Firearm Arrest

Evanston police arrested a 22-year-old man after a traffic stop Wednesday evening when they found a 12-gauge pump shotgun with pistol grip in the car, police said.

Hector Hernandez, 22, of Winthrop Harbor, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and other firearm charges, including possession of a firearm without a valid FOID. He also had an outstanding warrant for assault from Evanston police. Givanni L. Renteria, 24, of Evanston, who was also in the car, was arrested on a warrant from Lake County for resisting a police officer.

Police said that at about 6:20 p.m., officers stopped the men’s car for a traffic violation in the 1200 block of Hartrey Ave. The officers learned that both men had outstanding warrants and while placing them in custody, located the gun.
