Only 224 votes determined the winner of the Republican nomination for Will County sheriff but the candidate on the short end will not pursue a recount.

"It was a very close race and upon weighing all my options, speaking with my attorney, my wife and my supporters, unless something comes to light it's unlikely I'll make up the 224 votes," candidate Nick Ficarello said Tuesday afternoon.

When the polls closed and ballots were counted on election night, Ficarello trailed current sheriff's department Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas by 223 votes. After provisional and absentee ballots were counted April 2, Kaupas' lead increased by one to 224.

Kaupas, the cousin of retiring Sheriff Paul Kaupas, will face Democrat Mike Kelley in the November election.
