Evictee Who Planted Fake Bomb Later Found Dead in Jail Bathroom: Police

The Elgin man was arrested during an eviction Tuesday morning for threatening a public official.

A 51-year-old Elgin man accused of planting a fake bomb on his lawn while police conducted a court-ordered eviction of his home Tuesday morning has died after authorities found him unresponsive in the bathroom of the booking area at the Kane County Adult Justice Center in St. Charles.

Piotr Dutkiewicz, of the 600 block of Forrest Ave. in Elgin, was taken to Delnor Hospital after he was found in the bathroom of the jail at 37W755 Illinois Route 38 in St. Charles. Officers and medical staff attempted life-saving measures and Dutkiewicz was taken to Delnor where he was later pronounced dead, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office press release.

“We have not ruled out suicide, but we do not suspect foul play,” Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler wrote in an email to the Kane County Chronicle. “As far as exact details, we are still investigating it and are not in a position to go into all the details as this is still ongoing.”

Dutkiewicz was arrested Tuesday morning when police said he put an item on the ground that was labeled “bomb” while a Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputy was at his home conducting an eviction, police said. The item appeared to be a large battery with wires taped to it.

“A member of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad responded to the residence and quickly determined the suspicious device was not real,” according to the news release. “Deputies finished the eviction with no further issues.”

One other person at the home, an ex-girlfriend of Dutkiewicz, exited the residence without incident.

Dutkiewicz was charged with disorderly conduct and threatening a public official, both class 3 felonies, but had not yet appeared for bond call when he was found unresponsive in the jail bathroom, police said.

The death remains under investigation.  Attempts to locate Dutkiewicz’s next of kin have been unsuccessful. Anyone with information about Dutkiewicz should contact Sheriff’s Detectives at 630-444-1103.
