A $200,000 bond has been set for a 42-year-old South Elgin man accused of opening fire on another automobile last week on Interstate 355.

Vaughn Atkins, of 1409 S. Blackhawk Circle in South Elgin, appeared in bond court Wednesday afternoon. Atkins has been charged with two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, which is a class one felony, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's Office press release.

Illinois State Police received a report at 5:45 p.m. on March 21 regarding shots that were fired on southbound 1-355 near Ogden Avenue

Police later learned Michael Ingram was traveling south on I-355 just north of Ogden Avenue when he allegedly switched lanes, cutting off Atkins and forcing his vehicle onto the shoulder of the road.

Atkins is then accused of pulling his vehicle alongside the driver’s side of Ingram’s vehicle, pointing a handgun at Ingram and pulled the trigger, hitting Ingram’s vehicle in the driver’s side rear passenger door, according to the news release.

Police said Atkins then exited the highway and sped away.

An investigation into the shooting conducted by the Illinois State Police and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office led authorities to Atkins who was arrested at his home in South Elgin on Monday.

Atkins is next expected in court on April 28 for an arraignment.
