Glen Ellyn Park District Planning Dog Day Afternoon Saturday

Take a walk around , particularly downtown, and one thing becomes clear, this is a dog town.

Whether riding in style on the back of a bike, getting carried to and fro or enjoying a run with the human BFF, dogs here are living large.

On Saturday, the will host an event for pooches and their people. The fifth annual Poochapalooza will be held at the Spring Avenue Dog Park.

The event draws about 400 people and pooches, roughly the number of park members, said Kathleen Talenco, marketing and communications supervisor for the Glen Ellyn Park District. While the park is normally open only to members, during Poochapalooza any dog owner is welcome to enjoy the festivities at the park.

The event was an offshoot of the Doggy Dip, which was an end of the year romp for the pups in the Sunset Pool, Talenco said. The Illinois Department of Health had raised concerns about dogs swimming in public pools for health reasons and the park district discontinued the event in 2008.

“Doggy Dip was such a popular event and many people were disappointed it had to be canceled,” Talenco said. “As a result, we decided that, since we have such a great dog park, we would develop a new special event for dog lovers and hold it there.”

During the event a sheep herding demonstration will be held. Trained dogs will follow their handler’s direction and round up the sheep. Along with sheep herding there will be an agility training course, canine good citizen evaluations, dog obedience training and a demonstration from the Windy City Disc Dogs.

Every dog in attendance will receive a bag filled with treats, according to the park district. A number of businesses will be on hand providing information and giveaways. There will be concession items for sale.

Poochapalooza will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Spring Avenue Dog Park, located behind the Glen Ellyn Park District offices.
