For Joey

Family and friends of Joseph "Joey" Frase gathered near Campbell Airport Tuesday, Jan. 22, for a candlelight vigil to honor his life and memory.

Frase, 20, of Grayslake, had gone missing from a party in Round Lake's Madrona Village in the early morning hours of Sunday, Jan 20. Volunteers searching in a tree line near the area of Campbell Airport in Round Lake Park Tuesday morning discovered his body.

The sad news came as a shock to the community, who had rallied behind the family on a missing person Facebook page created to help find Frase. By Tuesday night, the page had more than 2,300 "Likes" and hundreds of condolences.

"I wish we could have done more....sooner!!! So sorry for your loss, know that the whole Village of Grayslake is thinking of your family," posted Linda Scholz.

"As everyone else, I'm also so sorry for your loss and am very saddened by the outcome, hoping for a much better fate. Times like these bring total strangers together, so I sincerely hope there is comfort in that and in the memories that you will always have," posted Sherry Dickson Christol.

Dozens turned out for Tuesday's vigil near Campbell Airport. Family and friends lit candles, left flowers and shared memories of Joey, a 2011 graduate of Grayslake Central High School who worked at Anthony Buick GMC in Gurnee.

At Tuesday's memorial, mourners gathered in a circle, held hands and recited the Lord's Prayer. A bagpipe recording of "Amazing Grace" floated through the frigid air.

"Joey had beautiful eyes and a beautiful smile. He was my first kiss," said one young woman.

Reminiscing about the laughs they had in high school and hanging out, friends said Joey was a great guitar player who was popular with the girls and had a wonderful sense of humor.
