Highland Park Teens Explain Dyslexia Nov. 19

Highland Park High School freshman and an Edgewood Middle School eighth grader will be on panel discussion at Deerfield Public Library.

On Wednesday, November 19th at 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Deerfield Public Library, Everyone Reading Illinois will host a panel discussion: The Real Face of Dyslexia.

Highland Park High School freshman, Heather Knobel and Edgewood Middle School eighth grader Benny Cohen will shed light on what it is like to be a student with dyslexia highlighting learning strategies, assistive technology and self-advocacy.

This discussion is part of an on-going effort to bring together parents, teachers, and other professionals to learn, network and discover the latest research, methods and tools for working with individuals with dyslexia.

Organizer Shira Schwartz, a parent advocate, teacher and mother of a dyslexic 5th grader, hopes that parents and children will consider attending this important evening together.

“Having dyslexia is so much more than just struggling to read” stated Schwartz. “It’s about accessing appropriate learning strategies to leverage your strengths to be successful. Benny and Heather are in a unique position to be able to use their story to inspire and empower families touched by dyslexia.”

Parents and children of all ages are encouraged to attend this program. Organizers will also be creating a mentor program teaming up children with similar learning challenges with older (high school aged) mentors.
