Hoverboard Explosion Damages Highland Park Home

Video shows the moment a hoverboard's batteries caused a severe fire.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL - A hoverboard explosion in Highland Park earlier this month caused extensive damage to a home.

ABC 7 Chicago’s I-Team and the Associated Press recovered a home security video of the Feb. 16 incident, which shows that just before 7 p.m. small sparks turned into a loud explosion causing a fire. It’s believed that the batteries from one of two hoverboards located in the room was the cause.

The hoverboards were holiday gifts for the daughters of homeowner Dan Perper, who said that even though the Highland Park Fire Department put out the fire in 10 minutes his family likely won’t be living there for another year.

“I’m just really, really, really happy I wasn’t there when it started,” said Amanda, Perper’s sixth grade daughter who was more concerned for the family dog, Ozzie, who was home at the time.

The have been 352 hoverboard explosions in the United States over the last six months, causing tens of thouands of dollars worth of damage.
