One-Car Crash Leads to Two DUI Arrests: Police Blotter

Crash near North and Bruner

Responding to a report of a car crashing into a tree late Friday night, Hinsdale Police said they arrested two women and charged them with DUI.

Witnesses said they saw Bethany Halperin, 36, of Hinsdale, driving the vehicle when it struck a tree near the intersection of North Street and Bruner Place at 10:51 p.m., according to the police report. Witnesses told police a passenger in the car, Roxanne Wallace, 22, of Westmont, then got behind the wheel and drove the vehicle into a nearby residential driveway, the report said. Halperin lives on Bruner Place.

The officer responding to the crash observed both women under the influence of alcohol, according to police. Wallace submitted a breath sample that was more than the legal blood-alcohol limit of .08 and was arrested at the scene, police said. She was charged with DUI and released on a promise to appear at a later court date.

Police arrested Halperin at the scene and charged her with driving while her license was suspended for a previous DUI. After obtaining a search warrant, police took her to Hinsdale Hospital for a blood test to determine blood alcohol content. She was charged with DUI and failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash. Police said additional charges are pending lab results.

Criminal damage to property

A resident of the 300 block of Hillcrest reported water damage to the ceiling and walls of her residence, which she believed was the result of damage to copper pipes caused by home repair workers authorized to work on the house. She said the damage occurred sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning.

Harassing phone calls

A resident of the 900 block of York Road reported to police that an elderly person had made harassing phone calls to the residence.

Criminal trespass to commercial building

Police said someone used force to gain entrance to a vacant commercial building in the 10 block of West Hinsdale Avenue. Nothing was taken from the building.
