HF Softball Over Crown Point 4-2

H-F tops Crown Point in softball interstate game

Homewood-Flossmoor overcame a good softball team in Crown Point, to prove to be a pretty good team itself.

The Vikings beat the Bulldogs 4-2 behind a complete game from starter Sarah Burke.

"Pretty much all my pitches were working today," Burke said. "The wind was in my favor so it was a good day pitching. We were excited to play because we wanted some good competition. We're really happy with the way we played."

Angela Roberts was 1-for-3 at the plate for Homewood-Flossmoor, scoring twice.

Crown Point started the scoring in the first inning when leadoff hitter Rachael Suits reached on an error, later scoring on a sacrifice fly from Bailey Mores. The Vikings quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first when Roberts walked then was driven in two batters later by Kaitlyn Shereyk. Homewood-Flossmoor added two more runs in the third, scored by Jocelyn Velazquez and Roberts on a Kasey Nemitz single.

"I was just focused at throwing my hands at the ball," Roberts said of her plate approach. "I think it's better for us to play some competition because we work harder."

The Vikings extended the lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning before Crown Point attempted to rally in the seventh, but was only able to plate one more run.

"Our bats didn't come around til the end," Bulldogs interim coach Ginger Britton said. "A little slow getting off the bus and a little sluggish. We needed to get starter earlier against a better team and put the ball in play."

H-F's Burke struck out seven while allowing five hits, three of which came in the seventh inning.

"We've struggled the past couple of games and I just think they were determined," Homewood-Flossmoor coach Katie Rice-Hoger said. "They heard that (Crown Point) was very highly ranked and a good team, and it made them more determined. Today it was just timely hitting."
