Farewell Old Homewood Hotel?

Homewood Village President Richard Hofeld said both the old landmark and the old Shooter's location may be demolished by the end of the year.

Farewell Old Homewood Hotel?

Two prominent Homewood eyesores (as they’ve often been described) may soon be no more, according to an announcement from Homewood Village President Richard Hofeld during Thursday night’s H-F Area League of Women Voters annual potluck dinner.

During a brief presentation on the status of the village, Hofeld said the former Homewood Hotel located at 17400 Halsted St. should be demolished by year’s end. The building, originally built by well-known former Homewood resident Richard Irwin in the late 70s, was once a celebrated facility.

“It was a showplace,” Hofeld said in a former interview with Patch. “It was a place where you went for that special occasion … it was a wonderful place. Over the years, it declined.”

After Irwin’s death, the hotel saw many different owners—many of which were neglectful—and the building has been in steady atrophy since.

The village of Homewood closed the doors of the hotel for the last time one year ago due to multiple health and safety violations; it then went into receivership.

In addition to the planned demolition of the old hotel, Hofeld said the old Shooter’s restaurant location at 17500 Halsted, another bank-owned property, is also on the leveling agenda.
