‘Inebriated’ 9-Months-Pregnant Mom Left 2-Year-Old Home Alone: Cops

The inebriated, pregnant mom was hospitalized, and the 2-year-old was turned over to her brother-in-law, police said.

JOLIET, IL — An inebriated, 9-months-pregnant mother left her 2-year-old son home alone while she drove around drunk, police said.

The cops reportedly got a call of an impaired driver on the near west side at about 3 a.m. Saturday.

Officers tracked the car down near the corner of Elizabeth Street and Ingalls Avenue and found the driver, 35-year-old Natalie Kallio, talking on her phone, police said.

Kallio initially refused to speak with the officers, police said. She eventually opened the door of her car and turned out to smell of alcohol, according to police, and was also “very inebriated and slurring her speech.”

The officers spoke with the person Kallio had been talking to on the phone and found out she had a 2-year-old son, who was not with her in the car, police said.

The officers reportedly called for an ambulance, as Kallio was 9-months pregnant and “highly intoxicated.” She was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

The man on the phone, who was Kallio’s brother-in-law, reportedly gave officers her address on Scribner Street. The cops headed over there, police said, were let inside by the brother-in-law and found the 2-year-old in a crib. The child was alone in the home.

The 2-year-old was taken into protective custody by the police and turned over to the Department of Children and Family Services. DCFS released the child to the brother-in-law.

Kallio was processed at the hospital on a charge of endangering the life or health of a child and released on her own recognizance.
