Teen Races Through Town But Gets Caught After Losing Wheel: Cops

A teenage boy allegedly led police on a wild chase around the east side but was captured after a wheel came off his car and he couldn't get away on foot.

The 16-year-old was taken into custody in a Herkimer Street backyard about midnight Sunday.

The teen was charged with criminal trespass to a motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing or eluding, reckless driving, obstructing a police officer, and violating his curfew. He was booked into River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

A patrol officer reportedly spotted a car driving erratically near the intersection of Collins and Cass Streets. The officer activated his lights to pull the car over, but it took off, police said.

The car left the road and drove along the sidewalk for a time, police said, and when it got back on the street, nearly hit another vehicle.

The car then swerved back onto the sidewalk and blew a stop sign before one of its wheels came off, police said.

At that point the teen bailed out of the disabled car and made a run for it, police said. He was collared in the Herkimer Street yard.
