Scouts Overwhelm Hersey in Regional Semifinal

Scouts Overwhelm Hersey in Regional Semifinal

A solid defensive effort paved the way for the Lake Forest High School basketball team’s Regional semifinal victory over Hersey today, 69-45, in Lake Zurich to advance to the championship game Friday.

The Huskies kept the game close until early in the second quarter when Lake Forest went on a 19-8 run to take control. After that, balanced double figure scoring from and suffocating defense put the game away.

“Our defense came through,” Scout Coach Phil LaScala said. “We got some steals, some deflections and were able to go on a run. That made everything else come through for us.”

Downey led the way with 21 points while Bass and Boudreaux had 13 each. Boudreaux grabbed 10 rebounds and Downey six. LaScala credits exceptional teamwork with the offensive effort of the three players.

“Everyone made a concerted effort to make the extra pass,” LaScala said. “We have five guys who can score in double figures on a given night. (Downey, Boudreaux and Bass) got the good shots.”

Downey kept the Scouts in the game in the first quarter with eight of his 21 points. The period ended in a 15-15 tie. Downey was joined by Boudreaux in the second quarter as they combined for 12 of the Scouts’ 19 tallies.

Bass joined the party in the third stanza with nine of his 13 scores to help push Lake Forest to a 20-point edge at the end of the quarter, 55-35.

Lake Forest plays for the Regional championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday against North Suburban Conference rival Mundelein in Lake Zurich. The Scouts upended the Mustangs, 69-61, in November and fell, 62-56, in March.
