Off-Duty Cop Helps Nab 2 Who Mugged Senior Citizen: Police

A Chicago police officer heard the elderly man yelling for help Sunday in Lake View after he was punched in the face and knocked down

Chicago, IL - An off-duty Chicago police officer sprung into action Sunday afternoon when he saw two men rob a 63-year-old man at gunpoint on a street in Lake View.

According to police, the victim was walking on the sidewalk in the 1000 block of W. Barry Street around 3 p.m. when one man punched him in the face and knocked him to the ground. The offender pulled out a handgun and "announced a robbery," according to police before a second man came on scene and went through the victim's possessions. They also struck him with the gun.

An off-duty police officer in the area heard the victim yelling for help and confronted the two men, drawing his service weapon and announcing he was a police officer. The two men ran away with the victim's wallet.

The officer chased them and called in to emergency operators with a description of the two.

On-duty police found the pair and apprehended them after a brief foot pursuit.

Facing charges in relation to the incident are David S. Shabazz, 20, of the 5400 block of S. Aberdeen and Juwon Askew, 18, of the 200 block of W. Garfield. Shabazz was charged with aggravated battery to a senior, armed robbery and carrying/possession of a firearm. Askew was charged with aggravated battery to a senior, armed robbery and resisting arrest.

A weapon was recovered from the scene, according to police.
