Now you can replay the routine that landed Lemont High School the 2014 IHSA Medium Division Cheerleading State Championship at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Ill.
After posting the top score in their division on the first day of competition, the Indians put forth a nearly flawless routine in the final round and held on to capture the 2014 IHSA Medium Division Cheerleading State Championship at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Ill. Lemont has won trophies in each of its nine state finals appearances, and has won four state titles in six seasons.
The Indians’ state championship is their first under head coach Dave Erlenbaugh, who is in his second year heading the Lemont program. The Indians won consecutive state titles in 2009, 2010 and 2011 under former coach Brittany Glowa.
In the championship round, Lemont posted a score of 90.84, which marked its best score of the postseason. Morris and Highand each won state trophies as well, posting scores of 88.98 and 88.92 to finish second and third, respectively, in the IHSA’s Medium Division. Mascoutah (87.40) and Crystal Lake Central (87.30) rounded out the top five.
Lemont’s first-day score (88.22) was tops among the 25 entrants in the medium division, ranking just ahead of second-place Crystal Lake Central (87.96). The top 10 teams after the first day move on to the final round of competition.
Erlenbaugh’s squad includes seniors Madison Detres, Emily Durham, Gianna Letizia, Miranda Neumann, Rebecca Peraino, Kelsey Tate, Gianna Turek and Danielle Wohead; juniors Alyssa Bakovich, Easton Kral, Reann Kwasneski, Elly Lambert, Nicole Markley, Stephanie Markley, Kayly Norris, Samantha Palumbo, Jenna Polk and Samantha Walus; sophomores Erin Cliff and Katelyn Papierski; and freshman Caitlyn Henry. Detres, Durham, Tate, Turek and Wohead all were part of the school's last state championship squad as freshmen in 2011.
Lemont’s cheerleading squad is the only athletic program in school history to win an IHSA team state championship. In addition to its four state titles, the Indians finished as state runners-up in 2007, 2008 and 2013, and brought home third-place trophies in 2006 and 2012.
Lemont, which won the South Suburban Conference title last month, qualified for the 2014 IHSA State Finals by finishing as the runner-up in its division at the IHSA Riverside-Brookfield Sectional on February 1. The Indians posted a score of 86.77, which trailed only fellow SSC school and IHSA Sectional titlist Oak Forest.
Cheerleading is the sixth Lemont High School sport to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. The Poms/Dance team competed at the IHSA Class 2A Competitive Dance State Finals; sophomore Taylor Campos participated in the IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals; senior Bridget Lynn competed at the IHSA Class AA Girls’ Golf State Finals; junior Annette Lesnicki advanced to the IHSA Girls’ Swimming State Finals; and senior Lisa Gawron took part in the IHSA Girls’ Tennis State Finals.
