Come on out to the Libertyville Fire Department, 1551 N. Milwaukee Ave., to learn about fire prevention and safety while supporting the Pink Heals Tour

Those who attend will be able to sign a pink firetruck that will be at the station.

"The Pink Heals Tour is a national organization that paints firetrucks pink, to raise awareness for any type of cancer that women battle," said Ken Komers, assistant fire chief.

Planned activities include a rollover simulation that demonstrates how people can get ejected from vehicles when they aren't fastened in.

"This part of the open house promotes seat belt awareness by showing how dangerous it can be for people if they aren't bucked up," Komers said.

There also will be a firefighter/divers demonstrating a dive in a tank, and kids will be able to communicate with him through a headset, just as firemen do during a real emergency, Komers said.

"Residents will be able to take a look at the new dive and rescue truck, which was donatd by PeaPod and rehabbed by firefighters, and watch our divers in action," Komers said.

A mock kitchen will be set up that simulates a fire on the stove and countertop, and children will have the opportunity to use fire extinguishers to put out a real life (with the assistance of firefighters).

"The kids also will be able to shoot the extinguisher at a house with simulated fire, and the alarm on the front of the house will stop sounding once they 'put it out,'" Komers said.

The Fire Department Open House will be held Saturday, October 13 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Libertyville's main fire station.
