Ten Lake County artists won awards at the Sept. 28 opening reception of the 32nd Annual Recent Works exhibit at the College of Lake County’s Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art. With 400 in attendance, the opening reception broke all previous records, according to Steve Jones, gallery curator.
The following winners were selected by jurors Diane Levesque, Director, H.F. Johnson Gallery of Art at Carthage College, and Peter Olson, Assistant Director, Northern Illinois University Art Museum.
Awards of Excellence of $300 went to Jane Ellefson of Lindenhurst for “Reflection” and Justin H.E. Mueller of Waukegan for “Addict.”
CLC Purchase Awards, with funds sponsored by CLC Foundation, went to Michael Higgins of Antioch for “Kyoto” and to Eric Rosell of Grayslake for “Towanda #3.” These works will become part of CLC’s permanent art collection.
Special Award of Merit of $150, sponsored by the Antioch Fine Arts Foundation, went to John G. Hatlestad of Grayslake for “The Crowd Grew Ugly.”
Awards of Merit of $100 were awarded to Roland Miller of Grayslake for “Aft Detail, Space Shuttle Discovery” and to Kathy Weaver, Highland Park for “Tarzanian Koppe.”
Honorable Mention of $50 went to Brooke Baldi of Libertyville for “World War Two Allied Leaders Depicted as Silverware,” to Amy Robillard of Libertyville for “Leaving” (Ali O’Brien, donor, in memory of Orva Vaupel); and to Frank Joseph Vioski of Winthrop Harbor for “Lou Babe.”
The Recent Works exhibit is on view through Nov. 4. Selected from 227 entries, the artwork in the exhibit includes 58 pieces in various media, created by artists who live or work in Lake County.
The Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art on the Grayslake Campus is a project of the College of Lake County Foundation and is located at 19351 W. Washington St. Established by the College of Lake County Foundation in 1981, the gallery is committed to displaying the works of Illinois artists and increasing the visibility of nationally known artists in Lake County.
