Pilot in Fatal Plane Crash Identified [UPDATE]

Elgin man died in crash near Plano.

The Kendall County Coroner identified the man killed in a small two-engine plane crash near Plano as an 80-year-old Elgin resident.

Coroner Ken Toftoy said John Juergensmeyer was found about 10 feet from the wreckage of the Cessna and pronounced dead at 10 p.m. Sunday, according to the Chicago Tribune. Juergensmeyer was reportedly flying low over a wooded area when he struck some trees before crashing the plane into a corn field.

Kendall County Sheriff’s police said deputies responded to the crash at 8:04 p.m. in the 15600 block of Griswold Springs Road. Sheriff’s deputies, along with firefighters from Little Rock-Fox Fire Protection District and Sandwich Fire Department, found the pilot’s body and debris from the small plane.

Crews used a helicopter equipped with night vision to find the wreckage, Little Rock-Fox Chief Greg Witek said Sunday.

Juergensmeyer was reportedly the only person on board the plane. It is not known where he was headed at the time of the crash, the Tribune reported.

Kendall County Sheriff’s police said the Illinois State Police also responded and have assumed command of the crash scene. State police and FAA are investigating the cause of the crash.
