Railroad Quiet Zone for New Lenox Coming by the Fall?
Officials are moving forward with implementing a "horn-free" zone for Metra's SouthWest line.

New Lenox officials this week took the next step toward establishing a quiet zone along Metra’s SouthWest line.
Trustees OKed a $15,000 plan to engineer the project, with hopes of completion by the fall, Chicago Tribune reports.
Quiet zones permit local governing bodies to require engineers silence their trains’ horns at crossings where all federally required safety measures have been made, paid for by the local body. Crossings that would be impacted include Wood Street, Joliet Highway, Illinois Highway and Spencer, Laraway, Delaney, Cedar and Baker roads and a private crossing, according to the report.

Village engineer Will Nash expects an additional $15,000 in expenses. The Village will need to lay pavementing striping and installation of “no train horn” signs, but officials do not anticipate needing vertical barriers or raised medians to prevent drivers from going around the gates.
