A perfect Sunday morning, Aug. 5, in New Lenox turned out to be a tumultuous one for a few families living in the 300 block of Winfree Lane. Valuable tools were the target in three separate theft incidents. The complaints were all filed in about a half-hour span, beginning at 8:35 a.m.

Deputy Chief Robert Pawlisz of said two people complained that the tools were taken from their vehicles and another said someone walked into his open garage and helped himself to his tools.

All total, the tools were valued at about $2,000, said Pawlisz. In the first report, police said someone stole $700 worth of tools from a car. After having taken the complaint, police officer didn't get far before he was flagged down by a nearby neighbor, who said someone walked into his garage and stole $500 worth of tools.

In the third complaint, police said someone took the time to actually pry open a locked tool box in the back of a truck and stole $800 worth of tools.

"It appears that these incidents are related," according to Pawlisz.

While police are investigating the trio of related incidents, Pawlisz took a moment to offer some ideas about why the burglars/thieves would seek tools. Tools are easy to sell at flea markets and even at construction sites.

In light of the recent chain of tool thefts, he offered a bit of advice for residents. Even though the thieves in this case were more bold and willing to break open locks, most of the time they're looking or easier opportunities.

He suggested that residents be proactive in protecting their property. "Keep your cars locked." Pull them into the garage, if that's an option.

"And lock the doors to your house," he added.
