Sinkhole Will Slow Touhy Traffic Friday

It looks small, but damage below could be deep. It's on Touhy near Northwest Highway, at Park Ridge's six-corners intersection in Uptown.

A sinkhole on Touhy Avenue in Park Ridge disrupted traffic Thursday, and will again on Friday, as crews work to repair it.

Traffic on Touhy could be narrowed to one lane in each direction from 6 a.m. until midday Friday. Commuters in the morning rush may want to take Oakton Street or Devon Avenue as alternatives.

"On the surface, it (the sinkhole) doesn't look like much, but our Public Works department said it's got signficant spread underneath," said Park Ridge Police Commander Duane Mellema.

Traffic horses and signs directed drivers around the sinkhole Thursday, and Mellema said that if large trucks kept driving over it, the pavement could crumble.

"Roads can look perfectly fine on top, but have significant gaps underneath," he said, adding it's usually shifting and water getting underneath the surface that cause sinkholes.

A citizen reported the sinkhole, which is in a westbound lane of Touhy immediately east of Prospect, Thursday, and police and public works blocked the area off starting in mid-afternoon.
