McDonald's Twitter Account 'Compromised' By Anti-Trump Tweeter

The hamburger chain took down the "tiny hands" tweet, but not before the Internet had its say.

OAK BROOK, IL — The president is known for lashing out in anger via Twitter, but on Thursday, someone gained access to the McDonald's corporate Twitter account to tweet out anti-Trump sentiment, prompting some — including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee — to call for an apology.

Just after 8 a.m., someone who apparently figured out the McDonald's Twitter password (or otherwise had access), wrote, "@realDonaldTrump You are actually a disgusting excuse of a President and we would love to have @BarackObama back, also you have tiny hands."

The now-deleted message immediately drew reactions from other Twitter users, who may not have realized the message was unauthorized. Self-proclaimed "YouTuber" Cole Ledford wrote, "McDonald's coffee must be strong today because they are WOKE."

He followed that up by predicting a Trump Twitter strike against the hamburger chain.

About an hour after the Trump tweet, McDonald's responded, saying the message was not authorized.

"Twitter notified us that our account was compromised. We deleted the tweet, secured our account and are now investigating this," the chain wrote. Later in the day, McDonald's said an investigation showed the account was "hacked by an external source, adding, "We took swift action to secure it, and we apologize this tweet was sent through our corporate McDonald’s account."

Some expressed disappointment to see the tweet go, with one man writing, "I'll buy 100 McNuggets right now if you put the tweet back up."

An Arkansas TV meteorologist ventured a guess as to who could be behind the Twitter hack: notorious McDonald's villain the Hamburglar.

And at least one person expressed doubt that the McDonald's account was ever really compromised.

Others wondered if a McDonald's employee posted the tweet and could be in big trouble. "The McDonald's social media guy is now barricaded in his office as security uses an axe to open the door," magazine editor and New York Post columnist John Podhoretz tweeted.

On Wednesday, Trump took to Twitter to comment on the "failing career" of Snoop Dogg after a video in which the rapper fires a toy pistol at a clown who bears a strong resemblance to the president. But as of late Thursday morning, he had yet to respond to the McDonald's tweet.

While the president had yet to respond, Huckabee did take aim at McDonald's for the tweet, writing, "If someone tweeted hateful remark re: and not fired & apology given, then hope stock goes down as badly as the burgers."

Shortly after the illicit tweet, someone created an "Alt. McDonald's" Twitter account, declaring, "They'll never find me" and "You can't delete the truth. #resistance"
