Victim in Oak Lawn Train Fatality Identified

The 59-year-old Oak Lawn man drove onto the train tracks early Monday morning.

OAK LAWN, IL — A Metra train and vehicle collided near 97th Street and Central Avenue in Oak Lawn Monday morning, killing the driver of a minivan. The driver has been identified as Arthur Hornsby, 59, of Oak Lawn.

Metra's No. 810 train struck Hornsby's van near East Shore Avenue. The train, scheduled to arrive at Chicago's Union Station at 8:17 a.m., was stopped for an hour. Train service resumed on the SouthWest Service line shortly after 9 a.m.

The collision occurred around 7:45 a.m. The white minivan was crushed and appeared to be wrapped around the front end of the train. Witnesses said the vehicle drove through the crossing gates and was pushed for several blocks.

Hornsby was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead.

All signals at the crossing were working properly, according to Metra.
