The loukoumades are being made as we speak as St. Nicholas’ 2014 Greek Food Festival gets underway this weekend, June 14 and June 15.
Sponsored by St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, this annual South Side gastronomic extravaganza is a true cultural celebration featuring homemade Greek dishes and pastries, Greek dance troupe performances and dancing, as well as a DJ and live music, kids games and rides, and family fun -- lots of family fun.
The ladies of St. Nicholas have perfected the art of making delectable loukoumades (fried dough balls drizzled with honey and cinnamon), served warm, during the annual festival. One vital element to achieving the perfect texture for the light dough is the weather. The recipe is adjusted for damp, dry or hot weather. Just an example of the pride and care put into the preparation of the homemade delicious favorite Greek foods and pastries served at St. Nicholas’ annual Greek Food Festival.
The fest runs from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 14, and 3 to 11 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, located at 10301 S. Kolmar Ave., Oak Lawn. Admission is $2 (children under 12 are free). For more information, call 708-636-5460.
