Trustee Wants To Shorten Trick or Treating Hours

Oak Lawn Village Board Trustee Alex Olejniczak thinks kids trick or treating until 8 p.m. on Oct. 31 might be "excessive." Wants board to consider reducing hours.

Trustee Wants To Shorten Trick or Treating Hours

trustee wants to reduce the number of hours the village sets for trick or treating on Halloween.

Trustee Alex Olejniczak (Dist. 2) told fellow board members during their meeting on Sept. 27 that he’s received a couple of phone calls from concerned parents.

The village presently allows children to trick or treat from 3 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31, the day of Halloween.

“The resident I talked to brought up a good point that sundown is at 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 31,” Olejniczak said. “By going to 8 p.m., the resident was concerned if that was too long of a window.”

TAKE THE POLL at the end of this story.

A majority of surrounding communities shut down trick or treating at 7 p.m. Others allow trick or treating until 6 p.m. and one community ends the candy grab at 6 p.m.

Olejniczak said he polled his four children ranging in age from four years old to high school. His kids planned to only be out for a few hours on Halloween and not the full five the village allots for trick or treating.

The Dist. 2 trustee added that 8 p.m. might also be a little late for seniors to be opening their doors to hand out candy. Olejniczak wanted to know how other village board members felt on the subject of Halloween hours.

Possibly reducing trick or treating hours will be added to the village board’s Oct. 11 agenda.

“I don’t want to be known as the trustee who took away Halloween,” Olejniczak said. “I am suggesting being a parent that I do believe trick or treat hours to 8 p.m. is a little excessive.”
