Oak Park News Briefs

Direct from Village Hall, a few things you oughtta know.

Oak Park News Briefs

From the Village of Oak Park E-Newsletter:

Deadline extended for proposals to redesign Village web site

The deadline for firms interested in submitting proposals to redesign the Village of Oak Park's municipal web site,  www.oak-park.us, has been extended to 5 p.m., Fri., April 6. Documents needed by companies that wish to bid on the project are posted online at  www.oak-park.us/webrfp. The goal, officials say, is to have a new site that is easy to navigate and less difficult to administer than the current site, which was launched in 2002. For more information, e-mail  vopnews@oak-park.us.

Regular yardwaste collection to begin

Collection of yardwaste will begin April 2. Bundled brush no larger than two feet in diameter and four feet in length and yardwaste such as grass clippings, leaves, shrubs and vines will be picked up on regular collection days. A green yardwaste sticker must be attached to each brush bundle, 32-gallon paper bag and rigid container. Stickers are available for $2.35 each fromOak Park grocery and hardware stores and the Cashier’s Office at Village Hall, 123 Madison St. Residents are urged to look for alternatives to bagging yardwaste such as mulching mowers, leaf shredders or backyard compost piles. For more information, call 708.358.5700 or e-mail publicworks@oak-park.us.

Sewer Backup Protection Grant Program soon to begin accepting applications

A program to provide financial assistance to property owners who install systems to protect their homes from sewer backup during a heavy rain event will begin accepting applications on Mon., April 2. Applications will be accepted through May 31 only from property owners whose household income is below $113,700. Beginning June 1, applications will be accepted from anyone who meets the program guidelines, regardless of income. Work eligible for funding through the Sewer Backup Protection Grant Programincludes installing an overhead sewer system or a backflow prevention system. Eligible homeowners may qualify for a grant of 50 percent of the total cost of sewer backup prevention improvements, up to a maximum of $3,500. Details on the program, including the application materials, will be posted at  www.oak-park.us/sewergrant. For more information on the program, call 708.358.5410 or e-mail  housing@oak-park.us

Verify contractor status online

Verifying the status of a contractor’s license and insurance is just a mouse click away. A feature on the Village website at  www.oak-park.us/onlineservices searches the  Building & Property Standards Department permit tracking database to determine if a contractor’s credentials with the Village are up to date. This step can help avoid unnecessary delays since a contractor’s license and insurance must be current for a permit to be issued. The Village does not recommend contractors for any work or provide an opinion on a contractor’s past performance. Any contractor who provides the proper documentation may register to perform work within the Village. For more information on building related matters, call 708.358.5430 or e-mail  building@oak-park.us.

Smoking is prohibited by state and local laws in virtually all public places and workplaces, including offices, theaters, museums, libraries, educational institutions, schools, commercial establishments, enclosed shopping centers, retail stores, restaurants, bars and private clubs. Anyone observing someone smoking in an enclosed public location is urged to call 708.358.5489. Callers should provide their name, telephone number and address, and location where the person was observed smoking.
