Misfits Craft Brewery Still Plans to Open at Old Fire Barn

Despite some setbacks, the brewery is working to finalize a business plan.

Misfits Craft Brewery Still Plans to Open at Old Fire Barn

Despite some apparent rumors floating around, Misfits Craft Brewery still plans to open at the Old Fire Barn building on Main Street.

Jason Thalman, one of Misfits' three partners, said there seem to be a lot of rumors of Misfits demise and misinformation about what is currently happening.

“This is a difficult business to start and there is a lot of detailed information that was needed to be gathered that we did not anticipate from the start,” said Thalman.

Plans for the brewery, which were , call for Misfits to brew and distribute three craft beers with a tasting room and a space for larger gatherings.

Currently the group is working to finish their business plan. Thalman said they are not taking the venture lightly and are taking measures to ensure the business has long-term success upon opening.

“I strongly believe that often times too many people rush into starting a business without taking all factors into consideration,” said Thalman.  And he added, that in his experience in the Marines, prior planning prevents poor performance.

The brewery, originally planned to open in October, was that Misfits cannot lease the old fire barn from the Oswego Fire Protection District because they would be manufacturing and selling alcohol.

“The Oswego Fire Protection District has been nothing short of 100 percent wonderful with us,” said Thalman. He added that both parties were disappointed with the statute, but that the OFPD “has been nothing but supportive in trying to come to a workable agreement between us in regards to leasing the old fire barn.”

Thalman said they had looked into purchasing the barn, but that the cost would hinder Misfits acquisition of private funding later on. Misfits has been approached by different parties in regards to an investment arrangement to acquire the building, but so far it is just preliminary discussions.

“This is a long journey, but if we follow the appropriate road map it will only ensure our success in the end,” said Thalman, as the group awaits quotes from a variety of areas and works to understand the distribution process of the industry.

"At the end of the day, it is about one thing and one thing only,” said Thalman. “The long term success of the brewery.”
