Palatine Rural Fire District Tax Hike Rejected

On a 611 to 517 vote, district voters said no to a small tax hike.

Palatine Rural Fire District Tax Hike Rejected
Voters on Tuesday rejected a bid by the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District for a tax hike, on a 611 to 517 vote with all 21 precincts counted, according to unofficial results.

“Asking for a tax increase is difficult,”  Fire Chief Hank Clemmensen told the Daily Herald. “We’ll probably try again in the future, although I can’t speak for the board.”

The chief was heartened by the closeness of the vote, but as a result of the vote the number of firefighters on duty at one time may decrease from five to four, he told the newspaper.

The hike would have provided $200,000 a year in additional revenue and would have cost a homeowner $50 for every $100,000 in assessed home value. The district includes unincorporated Palatine Township and Inverness.
