Joliet Man Shot in Gang-Related Attack; Possible Suspect ID'd

A Joliet man is hospitalized in intensive care after being shot five times Tuesday night in what police are calling a gang-related attack.

Joliet Police Cmdr. Brian Benton said the victim, 26, was walking his dog in the 400 block of East Jackson near Collins Street at about 6:30 p.m. when a car pulled alongside him and fired five shots into his torso and leg.

Police were able to speak to the man before he went into surgery at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox as well as to a person who witnessed the shooting, and are now are looking for a "person of interest" who could be the assailant, Benton said.

The cause for the attack is believed to be gang-related, and the victim does have gang connections, but Benton declined to discuss what information the police have that lead them to that conclusion. He also declined to say what type of gun was used or if there was more than one person in the car.

However, he did say that the shooting is not believed to have been in retaliation for any one event.

Despite being in intensive care, it appears at this point that the victim will survive. His dog was not injured.
