Walgreens Breaks Contract w/ Express Scripts

Within seven months, Deerfield based Walgreens said it will no longer fill prescriptions covered by Express Scripts today.

Express Scripts has about 90 million prescriptions left to fill by the end of this year. The two companies parted ways after failing to reach an agreement during contract renewal negotiations, according to the Dallas Business Journal.  The publication also noted that Express Scripts represent $5.3 billion in annual sales for the pharmacy giant.

With two locations in Skokie and a Walgreens President and CEO Greg Wasson said it wouldn't make sense for the two companies to continue their relationship in a statment today.

"As the largest retail provider their pharmacy network, we were surprised by Express Scripts' ultimate stance during our talks, which made it clear to us that they no longer had an interest in continuing a meaningful relationship," Wasson said in his statement.

Express Scripts will no longer be honored at Walgreens begining Jan. 1, 2012.
