1 Killed In Fiery Tanker Truck Rollover Crash On I-55

Northbound lanes of I-55 between Cicero and Pulaski reopen after haz mat crews clean fuel spill.

CHICAGO, IL—Northbound lanes of I-55 between Cicero and Pulaski remained Sunday afternoon after fiery rollover crash involving a tanker truck earlier in the early morning hours. The driver of the truck was ejected and pronounced dead on the scene, according to Illinois State Police.

The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. A preliminary investigation reveals that the Mack truck tractor-tanker was traveling northbound down I-55, just north of Cicero Avenue when it apparently lost control and overturned. Illinois State Police said the tanker loaded with diesel fuel veered onto the left shoulder striking the left concrete barrier wall. The tanker rolled over and became fully engulfed in flames while partially hanging over the concrete barrier wall. The driver was ejected, who succumbed to his injuries.

I-55 northbound lanes between Cicero Avenue and Pulaski Road remain closed and haz mat crews clean up a fuel spill from the tanker. Initial reports of the crash said that an SUV may have been involved. A 29-year-old man was taken to MacNeal Hospital, in good condition, news reports said.
