Doc Popcorn Holding Fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research

Doc Popcorn Holding Fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research

Want to help raise money for breast cancer awareness and enjoy a tasty treat?

Doc Popcorn stores, including the one inside Westfield Hawthorn Mall, are participating in a "Popping for Pink" campaign through the month of October. When a customer donates $1 to breast cancer awareness at Doc Popcorn, he or she will receive a $1 coupon to use during his or her next visit.

"It's a great way for us to help create funds for breast cancer awareness," said Mehb Khoja, owner of the Vernon Hills location.

Khoja said the proceeds from his store will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The donations will be partially matched by Doc Popcorn's headquarters.

Khoja said he got the idea to donate the funds to Susan G. Komen from a colleague, as well as two other people he knows who are breast cancer survivors.

"It's a great honor for us," he said, noting that two of his aunts also suffered-but survived breast cancer, and were two more reasons he signed up to support the cause.

"Unfortunately, we as human beings tend to take action when things affect us - and that's OK," said Khoja. "This gives us the opportunity to take action."

Doc Popcorn, Khoja said, offers an all-natural snack. He said Doc Popcorn kiosks started popping up in malls in Denver and Boulder, CO, about seven or eight years ago. Now there are nearly 70 locations across the country.

"The purpose really is to have a snack food concept that is more health-conscious," said Khoja. "We're trying to provide a healthier option."

There are nine flavors of popcorn for customers to choose from, including Caramel Kettle, Sinfully Cinnamon, Triple White Cheddar, Hoppin' Jalapeno, and, the most popular flavor, Better Butter.

"We've got something for everybody," said Khoja.

Doc Popcorn is located on the lower level of Westfield Hawthorn Mall near the mall entrance by Sears.
