Hawthorn Middle School South seventh grader Kavin Lavari was among 684 players across Illinois who participaed in the prestigious 2014 Illinois K-8 State Chess Championship trounament held in mid-March. Kavin won trophies in three different categories - Bughouse, Blitz and Individual.
Artwork from 22 middle school south students was showcased recently at the annual Conference Art Show held at Matthews Middle School. Hawthorn Middle School South brought home six out of 15 medals presented at the art show. In the mixed media category Mac Burgess won first place, Suan Lee placed second and Priya Rao placed third. In the computer graphics category Lauren Ellis placed first and Albert Kong placed second. In the ceramics/3-D category Lexi Rootberg placed second. Eight different schools were represented at the art show with other 200 pieces displayed.
Albert Madrzyk has qualified to represent Hawthorn Middle School South in the state geographic bee competition, which is held Friday, April 4 at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. One winner from each state will advance to the national competition.
The annual Pi Day, which celebrates the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, is a great excuse to show off students’ inner math expertise.
Students at Hawthorn Middle School South celebrated Pi Day with a friendly competition of reciting the digits of Pi. First place winner was eighth grader Jesse Ninapayta who got to 696 digits, and second place winner was seventh grader Eugene Lee who went out to 671 digits.
