University officials said a robbery could have taken place before or after the fall that occurred on Jan. 14 and police are continuing to investigate, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The fall occurred shortly after Mogni arrived for a semester program at John Cabot University in Trastevere. He is a third-year finance major at the Henry B. Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa and expects to graduate in 2016.

Mogni’s parents are in Rome, as is UI Assistant Provost for International Programs Doug Lee.
“The university’s thoughts are with Mogni and his family during this difficult time,” the school said in a statement.
Twitter posts under a “prayformogni” hashtag indicated the Glen Ellyn man had underwent surgery and was fighting off infections.
