Sandburg Elementary School in D200 Receives $1,000 Walmart Donation

Mrs. Gail Kramer was presented with $1,000 in gift cards by two representatives from the Glen Ellyn Walmart in October.

Sandburg English Learner (EL) educator Mrs. Gail Kramer was presented with $1,000 in gift cards by two representatives from the Walmart store at 3S100 Route 53, Glen Ellyn, on October 30, 2015.

Walmart personnel director Lori Early explained that every year, each Walmart store donates $1,000 in gift cards to a local school as part of its Teacher Rewards Program. The schools are able to use them however they choose. Ms. Early said that Sandburg Elementary School was chosen because of the demographics of the student body and intended usage for the cards, as outlined in a letter.

Mrs. Kramer said that she became aware of the program last summer. As a teacher of English learners, most of whom are classified as low socioeconomic status, she indicated her interest in directing the Walmart funds to the needs of the school’s low-income students and their families. 30 percent of Sandburg students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Some gift cards will be used to supply identified students with necessary winter clothing, including boots, snow pants and coats. Other cards will be given to families in need during December.

Principal Aaron Bacon and Mrs. Kramer expressed their appreciation to Ms. Early and Ms. Kathy Waner, back office associate, for Walmart’s generous donation and its support of teachers and the community.
