The Tigers battled the Rams to walk away with a critical win, 41-20, to stay in the hunt for the DVC title.
Many expected the 4-3 Tigers to have an easy time with the 1-6 Rams. When the Tigers scored on their first offensive play, a three yard run by Patrick Garner after a Ram fumble, the game seemed to be unfolding as expected.
The Rams had other ideas, though, and the next offensive series by Glenbard East drove deep into Tiger territory. After the Tiger defense held on third down, Ram field goal kicker Frank Loconti calmly drilled a 43 yard field goal. The Rams would go on to score a touchdown and another field goal to take a 13-7 second quarter lead over the Tigers.
Falling behind 13-7 served as a wake up call for both the Tiger offense and the defense. WWS finally got back in sync, taking the lead for good with 5:29 left in the second quarter on another Garner touchdown run for a 14-13 lead. The Tigers would go on to score again in the second quarter, taking a 21-13 lead into half time.
After some early lapses, the Tiger defense stiffened and did not allow another score until a minute and a half was left in the game.
Tonight’s win sets up a big cross town rivalry game next Friday when the Falcons of Wheaton North visit Red Grange Field to close out the 2011 regular season.
