Mrs. Ellen Murphy is an 11 year Special Education educator at Wheaton North High School in CUSD200. At the start of the 2014/2015 school year, Mrs. Murphy was approached by a hopeful student, who was looking for an extracurricular activity where he and others could build friendships with peers who share common interests such as video games, Anime, and card games. Mrs. Murphy understood the need for an all-inclusive after-school activity and offered to volunteer her time every Thursday from 2:30 - 3:30. The club is called Smash Club and is currently one of the largest volunteer-sponsored clubs at Wheaton North High School. It has grown to over 60 student members with approximately 30 attending on a weekly basis. Students who take part in Smash Club compete using video games and card games. They introduce new games to the club, view Anime and share their knowledge and experiences through gaming. According to Mrs. Murphy, “Students are participating in an activity where they can express their creativity and ideas while developing new friendships and building a greater connection to Wheaton North.”
Thank you, Mrs. Murphy, for listening to your students and volunteering your time to create a positive and safe extracurricular activity for high school students.
