Daughter of Malcolm X Will Be at New Trier on MLK Day

Ilyasah Shabazz, author of "Growing Up X," will talk to students at the school's Northfield campus.

NORTHFIELD, IL - Ilyasah Shabazz, the third daughter of the well-known late civil rights leader Malcolm X, will discuss racial issues with students at New Trier High School’s Northfield campus on Monday, Jan. 18, Martin Luther King Jr. day.

Shabazz was only two years old when her father was assassinated in 1965, but authored a number of books including “Growing Up X,” which details her experience growing up as the daughter of the late civil rights icon.

Pulitzer-prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson will be the keynote speaker at the school’s Winnetka campus. As the author of ”The Warmth of Other Suns,” Wilkerson will discuss her research into the Great Migration of African-Americans from the South during the 20th Century and how that migration continues to affect American society.

“Current events show us that there is still much work to be done toward creating a world in which people are judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin,” said Dr. Linda Yonke, Superintendent of New Trier Township High School District 203. “We are proud to spend a day exploring these important topics.”
