Teen Driver Pulled From Fiery SUV In Northfield

A 19-year-old driver had a medical event, crashed into a tree and was pulled from the flaming wreckage, police say.

NORTHFIELD, IL — A Schaumburg teen was pulled from the wreckage of his burning vehicle after suffering a health problem while driving in Northfield last week, police said.

Around 5:17 p.m. last Wednesday, a 19-year-old man experienced a suspected seizure behind the wheel of a 2012 Jeep Wrangler while driving down Waukegan Road, according to Northfield police.

Witnesses at the scene said the Jeep momentarily stopped in the roadway just north of Westleigh Road. It looked like the driver was ill, they told police.

Then, police said the Jeep veered off the road to the right. It struck a tree, bursting into flames.

Bystanders, along with two Cook County Sheriff's deputies, helped the teen out of the burning vehicle. He was taken to Lutheran General Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said.

There were no citations issued from the incident and no indications drugs or alcohol were involved with the crash, Northfield police spokesperson Lorene Boyes said.
