DGS Speech Program Earns National Recognition

's speech and debate team was recently recognized by the National Forensic League as one of the nation's top 100 teams.

Downers Grove South ranked 20th out of more than 3,000 schools based on student participation and excellence in speech and debate activities.

About 100 students participate in the team.

"Our club encompasses everything from speech and debate, to acting and public speaking, and we welcome all students," said Jan Heiteen, the team's coach.

"Hands down, it is the best program because the students learn leadership skills and it prepares them for life at college and beyond. We have both experienced and new kids on the team, and it's always rewarding to see them grow and change."

Recipient schools are published in Rostrum, the national magazine of high school speech and on www.nflonline.org, the web site of the National Forensic League.

The National Forensic League is an honorary society whose mission is to promote high school and middle school speech and debate activities as a means to develop a student's essential life skills and values.
