Alpha Energy, in cooperation with the town of Crisfield, Md., and Bearing Construction, has announced plans to break ground this spring on the Eastern Shore’s first community scale wind turbine. The 300 foot tall American made wind turbine will be installed at Crisfield’s Waste Water Treatment Facility (WWTF). The Aeronautica 750 will offset 100% of the town’s municipal power demand, making it one of the few municipalities in the country to be energy neutral, or Net-Zero.
“This project is a major milestone in the development of renewable energy facilities in Maryland,” said Alpha Energy President Marcellous Butler. “Crisfield’s Waste Water Treatment Facility is ideally suited for a community-scale wind turbine and passed our rigorous pre-screening criteria. Not only will the project benefit the environment and create jobs, but it will also benefit taxpayers by reducing municipal energy costs.”
The Maryland Energy Administration and Maryland Department of Environment played key roles in facilitating this project. Their leadership was crucial to bring this first of its kind project to the Eastern Shore. WWTFs are energy and space intensive components of a town’s infrastructure that do not require the removal of any green space to make way for green energy. Moreover, Crisfield has secured the cost and source of its energy for the next 20 to 25 years.
All the required elements for a successful wind energy project converge at Crisfield’s WWTF. The excellent wind resource and pre-existing electrical infrastructure coupled with the open area and a high electrical demand of a WWTF make this site ideal. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday, February 21st with project partners, state and city representatives in attendance.
