Antique Store Moves to West Annapolis

Retropolitan Fine Antiques and Vintage relocated to Annapolis from historic Ellicott City.

Antique Store Moves to West Annapolis

Visitors to the West Annapolis shopping district will find a new addition to the neighborhood: A vintage clothing and antique store called Retropolitan.

The store opened its doors in mid-December after relocating from Ellicott City.

"I had been in Ellicott City for 17 years, and I just decided it was time for a change," co-owner Cindi Ryland said. "I thought Annapolis would be great."

The retired French and Spanish teacher found her new space at 14 Annapolis St. on Craigslist one night.

"I was playing around on Craigslist, because I was starting to lose hope of finding a place and my new space popped up," Ryland said. "My future landlord knew my shop—it was kind of karma."

Ryland opened the store with her daughter Caitlin Ryland as a joint venture after she graduated college. Her daughter loved vintage clothing and Ryland loved tracking down one of a kind pieces. Their combined know-how caught the eye of producers at HBO's "Boardwalk Empire." The Rylands have supplied wardrobe items for seasons two and three and plan to help out with season four.

"They contacted me a little over a year ago and said they had been referred to me by a New York costumer," Ryland said. "I'm not a costumer per sé. I don't design the costumes—I just hunt and gather."

After 17 years in the business, Ryland said she has sources all over the world that help her find just what the show is looking for. She also uses her skills to help customers track down pieces.

"If you're looking for something, I will find it for you," Ryland said. "I love a challenge."

In addition to vintage clothing, Retropolitan carries antique goods like crystal, silver, lighting, textiles, furniture, jewelry, and fine art. Ryland said they also rent costumes and period furniture to theater companies and even to Realtors for home staging.

The store is open Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Customers can also make appointments for Monday and Tuesday.
