Happy July 4, Maryland! Local pets are celebrating in patriotic outfits, and residents are waving flags. Here are the state's top photos.

MARYLAND — Happy Independence Day, Maryland! Pets and their humans are celebrating the 4th of July in patriotic outfits. Let's take a look at some of the state's best holiday photos.
Deb Finnegan sent this picture of Penny, a 9-year-old Jack Russell terrier. Penny wore this American flag costume in a parade.

Michele Sanders took this photo of a dog, Riley Sanders, enjoying a boat ride on the Magothy River. This is one of his favorite activities.

Janet Neilson snapped this picture of her 2-year-old granddaughter, Charlotte Bock, celebrating last year's Independence Day in Rockville.
"Charlotte loves the American flag and was proudly waving it while family and friends enjoyed a barbecue," Neilson told Patch in an email. "This shot just screams summer, innocence and pure joy."

Sharon Hulton submitted this photo of her cat, Bear, decked out in holiday gear. The 23-pound Siberian kitty is 6 years old.
"Uncle Sam is ready to celebrate July 4th," Hulton said.
Tori Dewberry snagged this picture of her dog, Elber Macaroni, wearing flag sunglasses and a patriotic tanktop. Elber is a 9-year-old beagle-hound mix from Catonsville. He loves being silly, napping and eating everything within reach.
