BREAKING: Maryland v. Kansas: NCAA Basketball March Madness Final Score

Maryland, No. 5 seed in NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament South Region, faced No. 1 seed Kansas Thursday in Sweet Sixteen play.

LOUISVILLE, KY — The postseason run for the University of Maryland flamed out Thursday night in the Sweet Sixteen round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament with a 79 to 63 loss to No. 1 seed Kansas.

Maryland, the No. 5 seed in the South region of the March Madness men's basketball tourney, at times in the first half led the Jayhawks. The score at halftime was a close 36-34 with Kansas in the lead.

But, in the last 5 minutes of the game, KU began to pull away, notching a double-digit lead that it didn't give up.

Kansas moves on to an Elite Eight matchup March 28 against No 2 seed Villanova.

Kansas, with a 32-4 record, ended the regular season ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll. Maryland, at 27-8, was an early season pick to win the Big 10 conference, but struggled along the way.

The Terrapins beat No. 13 Hawaii 73 to 60 on Sunday to advance to the Sweet Sixteen round for the first time in 13 years. The pre-game betting odds said the Jayhawks would defeat Maryland by 7 points.

Maryland hasn't made it to the Final Four since winning the national championship over Indiana in 2002.
