Pasadena Driver Seriously Hurt In I-70 Crash: State Police

A Pasadena driver may have suffered a medical problem that caused his pickup to careen across I-70 in Frederick County, state police said.

PASADENA, MD — A Pasadena driver may have suffered a medical problem that caused his pickup to careen across all the lanes of Interstate 70 after MD 75 in Frederick County, Maryland State Police said. Louis Wayne Schatz, 69, lost control of his truck and crashed into another vehicle Monday morning in Frederick County.

Shortly after 10:45 a.m., troopers were called to the accident scene, where Schatz's pickup truck was westbound on I-70 when his vehicle struck the guardrail to the left, re-entered westbound traffic to the right and struck the second vehicle.

The truck then struck the right side guardrail, crossed all lanes of westbound traffic a second time, entered the median and crossed all lanes of eastbound I-70. Police say the pickup then struck the far right guardrail of I-70 East.

Schatz was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. Authorities believed he suffered some sort of medical emergency before the crash. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this crash, according to investigators. The driver of the second vehicle was not hurt and was released at the scene; authorities have not released that driver's name.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is investigating the accident.
